Introduction:
When it is done in a proper way, a piece of glass can adjust the light transmission rate passing through it by changing its transparency or colour. This process is called chromogenic. There are several chromogenics. They are electrochromic, photochromic, thermochromic and gasochromic etc. The most popular is electrochromic. There are two types of electrochromic, PDLC (polymer dispersed liquid crystal) and SPD (suspension particle device). And PDLC is most frequently used.

PDLC glass is a light control glass. It can regulate and adjust the light intensity or light transmission passing through the glass. Sometimes, it is known as intelligent glass, magic glass, privacy glass, smart glass or switchable glass.


Polymer dispersed liquid crystal film is a light changing liquid crystal film. It is base on the especial performance of liquid crystal material “light valve”. Crystal tiny drop in this film under external electric field rank, distribute in order, when incident light completely permeate, film display clear and colorless state; when external electric field disappear, crystal tiny drop in this film rank order is disturbed, which is made incident light scattering to create “sandblasted glass” effect. Also let positive and negative type of PDLC crystal dye bond make full color light valve film, through change voltage size and frequency to show kinds of color.

Regulating light crystal film firstly applies in NASA manned spacecraft glass new material project and obtain success.

This material through decade developing after invented, more and more applies in civil product market, because of productive procedure perfecting step-by-step and cost continuously reducing.

Process Method:
1 Regulating light liquid crystal film is easy to get wet, so when stock, it should be avoid contacting directly with moist air.

2 When in open air or strong ultraviolet radiation environment, it shall choose PVB film; choosing EVA or PVB as per equipment condition at indoor. Film and good or bad glass affects on regulating light glass permeation rate.

3 Heating temperature is 110±10℃, high temperature will destroy the liquid crystal film, furthermore, it is better that heating time is less than 2hr.

4 Recommendatory process procedure is

4.1 Lower temperature PVB + vacuum bag + autoclave
4.2 EVA + vacuum one-step method (No autoclave is required)

5 In assembling process, it should be keep environment clean, because sandwiching impurity easy to bring short circuit.

6 The distance for edge of liquid crystal film to edge of glass is more than 3mm in assembling process.

7 Regulating light liquid crystal film’s copper wire mesh electrode stick loose, so do not pull electrode forcibly.

8 Glass glue and sealant choose neutral glue.
